The Girlfriend Experience September 13, 2009

Posted by Sean Welsh in reviews.

Went to see Steven Soderbergh’s latest offering, The Girlfriend Experience, the other day. I guess its place in history is that is has cast a porn star in a “normal” film role. Despite the subject, which is a sort of documentary style presentation of a few days in the life of a call girl. There is no explicit sex in the film. Chelsea is a strangely detached sort of character (especially in the scenes with her boyfriend) and the film while obviously “well made” kind of just drifts along for its rather short 75 minute length. It certainly lacked the narrative drive of Soderbergh’s most famous film, Sex, Lies and Videotape. I guess perhaps that was the point. Chelsea for all her looks and high income seemed detached and going nowhere in a limo from one rich client to another. One never got the sense there was any real joy or meaning in her transient and artificial life.

While I did not mind going to see it at the movies, I’d probably wait for the DVD.
